When I studied at college in the UK, almost every class consisted of dictation. Why? The teachers were the owners of the knowledge we had to ‘learn’ so they read of the information and we copied it down. Afterwards, there was some discussion but still, it was like the famed ‘filling of empty buckets’. At university, good teachers alternated explaining models and theories with reflective questions, their own experience and their opinions. One even gave us a pop quiz and we could win a chocolate bar. These teachers tried to engage us and created a relationship and conversation, adding more than you could just find about the topic on Wikipedia. Now students have AI like ChatGPT and Bard so how can or SHOULD teachers respond in their role as teacher?
